Where you are · 04
Crossing sideways, with all your credits in the wrong craft.
A costume standby who wants to be in the art department. A camera trainee who has worked out that grip is the department they enjoy. A production coordinator moving to post. Somebody arriving from theatre, from live events, from construction, or from an industry with nothing to do with any of this.
Crossings are ordinary. They look impossible only from inside the department you are leaving, and the commonest mistake is not the application — it is arriving in the new department behaving like somebody with five years’ experience.
The order
Three things, and the first one is a reading exercise.
01
Read both skills checklists side by side
The one for the grade you are leaving and the one for the grade you are entering. The overlap is your case. Most people write the application from their CV, which is the half that does not transfer.
02
Write the application from the overlap
Not from your credits. A standby costume applying to art department leads with continuity, the standby’s day and working to a designer’s drawings — not with the shows.
03
Start at the beginning of the new department’s reading order
You are a beginner in the new craft regardless of what you have already done, and pretending otherwise is what gets a crosser disliked in the first week.
The list
Six things, and every one of these links out.
ScreenSkills — skills checklists (opens in a new tab) · Free · no account · both departments
Read the checklist for the grade you are leaving and the one you are entering next to each other. The overlap is the whole of your application.
ScreenSkills — job profiles (opens in a new tab) · Free · no account · before you commit
What the new job actually is, hour by hour, and how people normally get into it. A crossing made on an impression of a department usually gets reversed.
ScreenSkills — career maps (opens in a new tab) · Free · printable · anyone unsure whether this is normal
Diagrams of how the roles connect. Most crossings turn out to be routes somebody has already drawn.
Bectu — rate cards (opens in a new tab) · Free · published third-party data · both grades
Look up the grade you are leaving and the grade you are entering. A crossing usually costs money for a period and it is better to know how much before you commit than three weeks in.
ARRI Academy (opens in a new tab) · Paid courses · manufacturer certification · camera and lighting
A certificate from the company that makes the kit is the fastest way to have something on the page when all your credits are in the wrong department. Blackmagic’s free training does the same job for post, and Epic’s free learning paths for virtual production.
Blackmagic Design — free training (opens in a new tab) · Free · books, videos and project files · crossing into post
A complete free curriculum and free software. Post is the department a crosser can most credibly enter on demonstrated skill rather than on credits.

What it costs
The arithmetic of a crossing.
| What changes | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Your rate | It usually drops, because you are entering at or near the bottom of a different ladder. Look both grades up on the published cards before you decide. |
| How long that lasts | Longer than one job and shorter than starting from nothing. Credits in another department are evidence you can hold a day, which is most of what a head of department is worried about. |
| What carries over | Set discipline, paperwork, timekeeping, radio, safety, knowing how a day is shaped, and knowing how to be easy to have around. |
| What does not | The vocabulary, the kit, the standards and the pecking order. Assume none of it transfers and you will be right more often than not. |
What not to do

Then what
Start at the department you are entering.
The department guides, each with a reading order, a free list, a short paid list and the books.
The department guides
Camera, lighting, grip, sound, art, post, VFX, production, writing, directing.
How departments fit
Who argues with whom all day, and why your new department behaves the way it does.
The directory
The body for your new craft. One event and two conversations is the most useful thing a crosser can do.
