Your plates have grain and weave, and no metadata.

A film plate arrives as a scan of a physical original. It carries a grain structure, a small amount of mechanical movement in the frame, and none of the lens and camera data a digital body writes automatically.

All three are solvable. None of them should be a surprise in week one.

What to plan for

Four things, all decided in prep.

Grain

It is in the plate, it moves, and comps have to sit inside it rather than on top of it. The grade and the finish need to know the plan. Test it with the stock the film is actually using, because grain structure varies by emulsion and by exposure.

Registration and weave

Film moves fractionally in the gate. Modern cameras and scanners are extremely good, but stabilisation and tracking pipelines still need to expect it. This is a normal part of a film VFX workflow rather than a fault.

The metadata you will not get

No automatic lens, focus or camera record written into the file. Somebody has to capture focal length, stop, height, tilt and distance on the floor, by hand, on the plates that need it. Agree who, in prep. It is usually the reason a plate becomes difficult later.

Scan spec for plates

Plates may need scanning at a different resolution or in a different colour space from dailies. That is a budget and schedule decision, and it belongs in the prep conversation with the lab and the facility together.

On the floor

Markers and reference still work. Ask for them.

Tracking markers, reference stills, a survey, a grey and chrome ball — the ordinary disciplines matter more on film, not less, because there is no fallback in the file. The half-hour it costs on the day is the cheapest half-hour in the pipeline.
