Careers A–Z · Camera
Camera operator
The camera operator holds the frame. The DoP decides what the shot should look like; you are the person making it happen, live, while everything inside it moves.
On multi-camera drama you are A or B camera, with your own assistants.
The basics
Also known as, and where the grade sits.

|---|---|
| Also known as | Camera operator, or operator. A or B camera. Steadicam operator is a related specialism with its own kit. |
| Level | Mid to senior. A department head on your own camera, under the DoP. |
| Reports to | The director of photography, and on the floor the director. |
| Comes after | Focus puller / 1st AC, or Steadicam, or second unit. |
| Leads to | Director of photography, or a career operating, which many people choose. |
The job
What does a camera operator do?
You rehearse with the director and the actors, work out where the camera lives, and agree the move with the grip. Then you operate: pan, tilt, reframe, follow, and hold the frame the DoP asked for while the scene refuses to repeat itself.
You are the eye on framing continuity, eyelines and screen direction, and the person who says a take was compromised by something only you saw.
The unglamorous end: hours bent over a low mode setup or strapped into a rig, and long waits between set-ups where the job is to stay warm and ready.
The requirement
What is a camera operator good at?
Composition under pressure, and the physical control to deliver it repeatedly.
Framing
An eye that composes instinctively, take after take, without hunting.
Smooth movement
Pan and tilt that start and stop where the shot needs them to.
Reading actors
Anticipating a move rather than chasing it.
Diplomacy
Working between director, DoP and floor without becoming the problem.
Physical control
Steadicam, handheld and low mode are endurance as much as technique.
Kit
Tools of the trade.

Routes in
How do I become a camera operator?
Most operators came from assisting. A few came from Steadicam or from factual.
Steadicam
Buy or hire a rig, learn it properly, and get hired for the specialism.
Second unit
Second unit and splinter days are where operators are made.
Factual and multi-camera
Documentary, live and studio operating builds instinct fast.
A degree is not essential and is not usual. Operating is judged on what people have seen you shoot.
A reel of frames you held, and a DoP who will recommend you, is the currency.
