We run this · Set Ready

A live call sheet, with an assistant director and a floor crew running it.

Where to stand, when not to speak, who owns the thing you just picked up, and how a radio works. If you have never been on a set, this is the course that translates it. Before you book, read the free national alternative signposted below.

Who it is for

For people with no set experience at all, and for people who have some and got it wrong.

People trying to get a first day

Runner, trainee, floor assistant or daily. Nobody explains the rules because everybody assumes you know them.

People changing career, or from adjacent trades

Hospitality, logistics, construction, the forces, riggers, drivers, medics. You know your trade. You need the set around it.

People who have done a student shoot

A student unit and a professional unit share vocabulary and almost nothing else.

What it covers

Sessions on the floor, then one live run with a camera turning over.

Who it is not for

Do not book this if you are already on units.

Somebody else runs these

There is a free national route in, and it is paid. Look at it first.

CrewHQ (opens in a new tab) · Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden

The CrewHQ Trainee Programme, as CrewHQ publishes it: up to twelve months, two weeks’ initial training and then paid placements across production office, finance, construction, costume, camera, locations and VFX. Open to complete new entrants, 18 or over, with no qualifications and no industry experience required. Free to participants. If you cannot pay for training, start here.

A competitive cash grant toward training, travel, equipment, software and accommodation, UK-wide, 18 and over. It can pay for somebody else’s course as well as ours.

What you leave with

Written feedback from the practitioners who watched the live run.

What you did well, the one thing to fix, and which craft you seemed suited to. Plus a Crew Card entry and a certificate, each naming only what you were seen to do.
